Successful graduates of the 12 month Cytotechnology Program:
- Receive a Certificate in Cytotechnology from UW-Madison.
- Eligible to sit for the Cytotechnology Board of Certification examination through the American Society of Clinical Pathology. Passing this examination certifies a technologist as C.T.(ASCP). The registry examination is given during three predetermined times throughout the year.
- Start working in the field of cytotechnology.
- For 3+1 students: Coursework credits are transferred back to your home college or university in order to receive your degree.
Employment outlook:
- Recent graduates have found jobs in the following states: Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Texas and Wisconsin.
- In 2010, 73% of our graduates found jobs either in cytology or in a related field.
- Laboratory jobs included hospital based labs, private labs and biotechnology labs.
- Students have taken what they learned in the program and applied it to jobs in related fields such as biotechnology and microbiology.
- Other students use their year of cytology training to prepare for graduate medical education such as pathologist assistant, nursing and medical school.
- In 2010, 18% of our graduates continued their studies to apply to medical school and nursing school.
- Salaries vary by type of laboratory and region of the country.
- In 2010, our students averaged a starting entry level salary of $25.50 in the field of cytotechnology.
- For those in related fields, the average salaries were approximately $20/hour.
