Atrazine Screening Test

Atrazine is the most commonly used pesticide in Wisconsin. If present in drinking water in amounts above the advisory level of 3.0 parts per billion (ppb), atrazine may pose a cancer risk. The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene can test your drinking water supply for the presence of this pesticide.

Ordering Test Kits

To order a test kit, call the State Laboratory of Hygiene, toll free, at 1-800-442-4618 or, in the Madison area, dial (608)224-6202. Phone lines are open 7:45 a.m, to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

When ordering, please have the following information ready for each well you wish to test:

  • Name, address and phone number of the person to receive test results
  • Address of well
  • Please prepay with Visa, MasterCard or personal check

Directions for collecting the sample, a collection bottle and a container for mailing the sample back to the State Laboratory of Hygiene will be sent to you.

Results

The results, with explanations of what they mean, will be sent to you from the State Laboratory of Hygiene.

The Departments of Health and Family Services and Natural Resources consider atrazine levels at or below 3.0 ppb safe for drinking water. Contact DNR Water Supply at (608) 267-7653 for additional information.
