† Special information regarding HUD/FHA Loan Requirements:

United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires all of the above tests on private well water prior to accepting a house for FHA mortgage insurance. The Veteran’s Administration has the same requirements. The test results must meet the minimal drinking water quality requirements specified by HUD based on EPA recommendations. Please see /ehd/ or your mortgage company for additional information.

Kit Ordering Information

You may order sampling kits by calling (800) 442-4618 (in Dane County call 224-6202) or at our Customer Service desk in the lobby at 2601 Agriculture Drive in Madison, WI. Shipment of the kits to you is free, but you will have to pay for return shipment to our lab. Do not send payment with your samples. You will be billed after the tests are completed.

Water Testing Policy and Sample Requirements:

To ensure quality services, carefully follow all instructions, complete all test request forms thoroughly and submit water samples in the bottles provided by the WSLH. The bottles provided are pre-approved (i.e., quality checked) for the specific tests you requested. Failure to follow instructions or not use approved sample bottles may result in rejection of your sample(s).

Sending Your Water Sample

You can drop off your water sample at our Customer Service Desk in the lobby at 2601 Agriculture Drive, Monday - Friday from 7:45 AM - 4:30 PM or you can ship your sample to us.

Because some drinking water samples must be tested within a short time period after sampling, it is strongly recommended that you NOT ship samples to WSLH on Fridays for Saturday delivery. The WSLH building is not open to the general public on weekends and holidays and staff may not be available to process your samples. Even with overnight delivery, samples may not be received or processed to meet the time limit requirement and another sample will need to be taken and shipped.

Directions to WSLH - Environmental Health Division Lab at 2601 Agriculture Drive:

We are located on Madison's southeast side - just northwest of the intersection of Interstate Hwy. 90 and U.S. Hwys. 12 & 18. From Hwys. 12 & 18 (the south "Beltline"), take U.S. Hwy. 51 (Stoughton Road) north about one mile. Turn right (east) onto Pflaum Road. Proceed about one mile on Pflaum Road, and then veer right onto Agriculture Drive. Our building is on the hillside on the left. Customer parking is available near the entrance. Our Customer Service Department is just inside the entrance. Location map
