The Toxicology Section provides services to public health departments, clinics, physicians, coroner's medical examiners, law enforcement departments and other state agencies.
Our major programs include:
- Alcohol and comprehensive drug analysis for law enforcement agencies in support of Wisconsin Statute 343.305 (impaired driving). Testimony in court on laboratory findings, interpretation and pharmacology.
- Alcohol and comprehensive drug analysis for coroners / medical examiners in death investigations to determine implication in traffic fatalities or to assist in determination of cause of death.
- Analysis for blood lead to support efforts to identify childhood lead poisoning.
- Proficiency testing programs in blood lead, erythrocyte protoporphyrin and blood / urine alcohol to monitor laboratory performance of participants and provide consultation.
We receive approximately 60,000 specimens annually and perform over 100,000 analytical procedures. Forensic specimens account for 24,000 of the total specimens received. Of those 90% are tested for law enforcement and 10% for coroners and medical examiners.
