MADISON , Wis. - The American Society of Cytopathology has elected Dr. Daniel Kurtycz, a University of Wisconsin Medical School professor of pathology and the medical director for the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, to serve a four-year term on its executive board.

"The American Society of Cytopathology is the premier scientific organization of my specialty," Kurtycz said.

"Through the efforts of the members of the ASC thousands of lives have been saved and suffering averted. To be recognized by these people and placed on the executive board is one of the high points of my career.

"Personally, the ASC has been a source of education, of colleagues and friends. I am happy to be able to serve the organization that has given a great deal to me."

New Executive Board members will be installed during the ASC's 52 nd Annual Scientific Meeting on Nov. 16 in Chicago. Kurtycz will also receive the Society's 2004 President's Award at the Celestial Evening Awards Gala. The President's Award has been presented annually since 1992 to a pathologist or cytotechnologist in recognition of their contributions to the ASC and also includes a $500 honorarium.

Founded in 1951, the ASC is a distinguished national professional society of more than 3,000 physicians, cytotechnologists and scientists who are dedicated to the detection and early diagnosis of nearly all forms of cancer. The Executive Board is the general management of the ASC. The Board regularly performs the ordinary duties of a board of directors to appoint any Committee it may deem necessary and to delegate whatever powers necessary to the Committees. All Executive Board members are elected to serve a four-year term on the Board.

A long-time member of the UW medical community, Kurtycz directs the WSLH's School of Cytotechnology as well as its Cytology, Cytogenetic and Newborn Screening sections.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Michigan , he performed his residency in pathology and a fellowship in Clinical Chemistry with Dr. James Westgaard at Wisconsin and established UW's FNA Service and Cytopathology Fellowship.

Kurtycz has served extensively on several ASC committees, reviews several journals and is a long-term member of the ASCP Board of Registry for Cytology. He is also currently spending a year serving on the ASCP Resident in Service Examination committee.
