WSLH Appoints New Division Directors MADISON –The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene at UW-Madison, the state's public health laboratory, announces the appointment of three division directors. James Hurley, Ph.D., has been appointed Environmental Health Division Director. In this position, Hurley will oversee and provide leadership for scientific and research activities in the areas of environmental chemistry and microbiology, radiochemistry, toxicology, and chemical emergency response. Hurley also will hold a joint appointment with the UW Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He will begin with the WSLH on February 14. Hurley joins the WSLH from the UW-Madison Aquatic Sciences Center where he was Assistant Director for Research and Outreach. Kristine Hansberry, MBA, MT (ASCP), is Laboratory Improvement Division Director. She directs operations of the WSLH Proficiency Testing program, a federally-approved provider of proficiency testing services designed to help clinical laboratories meet licensure and accreditation requirements. WSLH PT serves nearly 4,000 clinical laboratories nationwide. Prior to joining the WSLH, Hansberry was Director of Laboratory Services at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo. Steve Strebel became Occupational Health Division Director on Jan. 3, 2011. The Occupational Health Division includes the Wisconsin Occupational Health Laboratory, the WisCon On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program for small businesses, and the Labor/Occupational Health Statistics section. Strebel has worked at the WSLH since 1985 serving as a chemist, technical supervisor and Deputy Director of the Occupational Health Division. As the State's public and environmental health laboratory and a part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene scientists and academic leaders provide analytical testing, consultation, research, and education in a variety of specialties, including infectious diseases, genetics, newborn screening, cytology, environmental sciences, occupational health and toxicology.
