Webcast: Assessment of Organic Compound Exposure from Crumb Rubber Infill in Synthetic Turf Athletic Fields
MADISON – Crumb rubber infill is used as a shock absorbing agent in synthetic turf athletic fields and is gaining popularity for both indoor and outdoor field applications.
WSLH Advanced Microbiologist Curtis Hedman discusses the results of a study to characterize the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), rubber-related chemicals (e.g. benzothiazole and nitrosamine), and particulate matter in air at synthetic turf crumb rubber fields for analytical support of a human health risk assessment study. Both newer and older fields were evaluated under conditions of active use. This presentation was given at the WSLH on July 21, 2011.
