Moor's Salvage & Recovery Earns SHARP Award From OSHA, WSLH
KIELER, Wis. - The Wisconsin OSHA Consultation Program (WisCon) at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) recently helped honor Moor’s Salvage & Recovery, Inc., of Kieler, Wis., for achieving the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Moor’s is the first salvage business to earn this federal recognition in OSHA Region Five - which covers Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin - and one of only six salvage companies across the nation among less than 1,000 total businesses to receive this honor. Moor’s worked with WisCon to resolve and improve the safety and health of its work environment.
“We are thrilled to receive this recognition for our company’s hard work,” Moor’s President Chris Moor said. “I was also very impressed with WisCon consultants Kim Dietz and Dick Lentz and the fact that they were solution oriented. They didn’t just say, ‘You have a problem – go fix it.’ They offered ideas for reaching a feasible solution. They were great to work with.”
WisCon Environmental Health Specialist Kim Dietz and Occupational Safety Consultant Program Supervisor Dick Lentz, along with Program Managers Terry Moen and John Chapin, attended the award ceremony on July 18 celebrating the Kieler salvage company’s achievement.
The WisCon staff joined OSHA Assistant Area Director Galen Lemke, Wisconsin State Representative Phil Garthwaite (49th Assembly District), and several other local community leaders to present President Chris Moor, Vice-President Julius Moor and their employees a plaque and banner commemorating the SHARP award at the company’s honor luncheon.
A privately-held company founded in 1973 by Paul and Velma Moor, Moor’s is a metal scrap, salvage, recycling and appliance de-manufacturing company, including chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) recycling, that serves Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. This family-run business recently embarked on an impressive capitol expenditure project in 2005 that included constructing a new processing building which houses the hydraulic division as well as a state of the art mechanics bay.
“Our company’s safety policy states that ‘Our most valuable resources are the people who work for us’,” added Vice President Julius Moor. “Employee safety is more than a company priority, because priorities can change during the course of time. Safety is considered a core value that is always at the front and center of our business belief system.”
The voluntary WisCon Program provides free assistance to employers to establish and maintain a safe and healthy workplace. Consultants conduct on-site monitoring for chemical, biological, radiological, and physical hazards; perform ergonomic evaluation; assess the employer's safety and health programs; and present occupational health-related training.
Part of WisCon, SHARP honors small and medium employers that operate top safety and health management systems, while also maintaining an injury and illness rate below the national average for their industry.
