Scot Forge Earns SHARP Award From OSHA, WSLHCLINTON, Wis. - The Wisconsin OSHA Health Consultation Program at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene recently helped honor Scot Forge of Clinton, Wis., for achieving the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). "It gives me great pleasure to help honor Scot Forge this week with the SHARP award," said State Laboratory of Hygiene Director Ronald H. Laessig, Ph.D. "This steel forge is the first forge and also the first-ever employee-owned business to earn SHARP status in our state and now is a member of an elite group of just 12 all-time SHARP honorees in Wisconsin. Scot Forge and its staff are helping set the bar for work environments that make safety and health a top priority for all employees." Representing the WSLH, OSHA Health Consultation Program Manager Terry Moen and Environmental Health Specialist Kim Dietz both attended the award ceremony on April 19 celebrating the Clinton forge's achievement. Moen and Dietz joined local and regional OSHA professionals, as well as Francis Huntley-Cooper of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development on behalf of Governor Jim Doyle, First District Director Danyell Tremmel on behalf of U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan, Regional Coordinator Katie Crawley on behalf of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold, and several local community leaders, to give Scot Forge President/CEO John Cain and Scot Forge employees a plaque and banner commemorating the SHARP award at the company's monthly employee luncheon. The voluntary OSHA Consultation Program is jointly administered by the Wisconsin Safety Consultation (WiSCon) Program at the Department of Commerce and the Wisconsin Health Consultation Program at the WSLH. Part of the OSHA Consultation Program, SHARP honors small and medium employers that operate top safety and health management systems, while also maintaining an injury and illness rate below the national average for their industry. Employing 168 workers in Clinton, Scot Forge began as a small hammer forge in Chicago in 1893. The company is now headquartered in Spring Grove, Ill., with operations at three separate U.S. facilities in Wisconsin and Illinois and has been 100 percent employee-owned since 1978. The Clinton facility is an open-die forging operation and makes forged parts to client specifications as to alloy, size, shape and finish. The specialty at this facility is Tartan Bars, rolled bars with a forged center and they also produce a variety of bar configurations, spindles, rings and other forged parts up to 50,000 lbs. Among other operations, the facility operates two hydraulic open-die presses, a 2,000 ton press and a 1,250 ton press. Scot Forge met program requirements by requesting a full-service visit from both the Wisconsin Safety and Health Consultation Programs and correcting all identified hazards to safety and health. Scot Forge also implemented and maintains an active safety and health management system that includes the broad categories of management commitment, employee involvement, hazard identification and control, and training and evaluation. This SHARP honor is one of just 12 in Wisconsin, 60 in OSHA Region V and just over 900 nationwide. As part of the OSHA Consultation Program, the staff of the Wisconsin Health Consultation Program provides free assistance to employers to establish and maintain a safe and healthy workplace. Consultants conduct on-site monitoring for chemical, biological, radiological, and physical hazards; perform ergonomic evaluation; assess the employer's safety and health programs; and present occupational health-related training.
