Bordetella pertussis / parapertussis PCR Testing Now Available Effective June 1, 2007 MADISON, Wis. – Bordetella pertussis / parapertussis combination PCR testing is now available. Because Bordetella species are slow-growing and fastidious organisms and identification by culture frequently takes as long as one week, PCR is considered the test of choice. Studies at WSLH have shown PCR to be approximately twice as sensitive as culture. Additionally, published studies demonstrate that the culture and direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) testing is insensitive for these organisms when compared to PCR. Acceptable specimens include nasopharyngeal swabs (dacron) and nasal washes in a sterile container. No swab transport medium should be used. The test can be ordered by writing in test code 3223 on a WSLH Communicable Disease Division requisition form. The cost is $75.00. The CPT code is 87798 times 2. If the B. pertussis PCR box is checked test 3223 will be performed. Test 3223 will be added to the next revision of the WSLH requisition form. If testing for B. pertussis only is desired this must be clearly indicated on the test request form. The cost of a B. pertussis only (test 623PCR) remains the same ($75.00) and the CPT code is 87798. We sincerely hope that this change in our testing menu will assist you in better managing your patients. We appreciate your help in notifying your staff clinicians of this testing change. If you would like more information about this testing please contact our customer service laboratory at 608-262-6386 or (800) 862-1013. ### Submitted By: Dave Warshauer, PhD, Deputy Director of the WSLH Communicable Disease Division (CDD) Date: May 1, 2007
