WSLH Sponsors Statewide Virology Conference

MADISON, Wis. -- Representatives from virology laboratories across Wisconsin gathered on the UW-Madison campus June 25th for the 19th annual Wisconsin Virology Conference sponsored by the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH).

While the novel H1N1 "swine" influenza pandemic dominated the conversation, conference attendees also discussed the effective use of various laboratory test methods, respiratory virus surveillance data and played a round of virus "Jeopardy".

The WSLH originated the conference as a way to provide information updates to staff from hospital/clinic laboratories while providing an opportunity to network and share information among fellow laboratorians. This annual meeting also provided the springboard from which laboratory-based viral surveillance began and was one of the earliest laboratory networks in Wisconsin.

Attached to the University of Wisconsin-Madison since its founding in 1903, the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene provides public, environmental and occupational health laboratory and consultation expertise to a wide variety of national, state and local partners. As the state's public, environmental and occupational health laboratory, the WSLH plays a vital role in maintaining the health and safety of Wisconsin's citizens, protecting the environment and providing training to other professionals.  Staff also serve as members of the UW-Madison faculty.
