The Wisconsin Occupational Health Laboratory (WOHL) was established in 1937 as a unit of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene.
WOHL operated as a one chemist laboratory until the early 70’s when work increased due to the passage of the Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA). In the late 70’s WOHL became a central laboratory for seven States participating in OSHA’s 7c1 Consultation Program. The number of State consultation programs using WOHL increased to 45 over the next 20 years.
In 1980, WOHL began providing analysis to clients other than the OSHA Consultation program. WOHL currently performs about 250,000 analyses on 65,000 samples each year and is accredited for all aspects of Industrial Hygiene analysis. WOHL was accredited for Environmental Lead in 1994 and for Environmental Microbiology in 2000.
