WOHL: Sample Analysis: Environmental Tobacco Smoke

ETS is a major contributor to indoor air pollution in environments where smokers are present.
Environmental tobacco smoke is an aerosol consisting of both vapor and particulate phases.
Tracers of ETS used in the past include respirable or total suspended matter, CO, nicotine, 3-ethenylpyridine, Solanesol , N-nitrosoamines and aromatic hydrocarbons. Of these tracers, only 3-ethenylpyridene(vapor) and Solanesol(particulate) are unique to ETS.
This analysis uses TD-GCMS instrumentation. The active sampler consists of a Thermal Desorption Tube attached to a sampling pump. The suggested sampling parameters are as follows: flow rate of 50cc/min and the collection volume should be between 10-50 liters which is dependent on expected levels of interference compounds and requested tracer compound.
