WOHL: Indoor Air Quality

VOCs - Formaldehyde (indoor air quality)

Formaldehyde is a frequent source of IAQ complaints in recently constructed or remodeled buildings. It can be emitted from particle board, new furniture and carpeting. There are several methods for sampling for airborne formaldehyde, but the most sensitive method is using media treated with DNPH and analysis by HPLC.  Formaldehyde reacts with the DNPH to produce a formaldehyde-DNPH derivative, which is analyzed by LC.

Samples can actively be sampled using DNPH catridges, where air is pulled through the cartridge and about 1 liter per minute.  Samples can also be collected on passive DNPH treated media.
