Patient Background

This specimen was from a bone marrow sample taken from a 54 year old man with a diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia. He had received a bone marrow transplant in 1993, but had a relapse of the leukemia in 1994.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) accounts for about one fourth of all of the leukemia cases. It can occur at any age, but is most common in people between 40-50 years old. It is an overgrowth of the granulocyte type of white blood cell.
