Dr. Peter Shult Testifies Before Congress about Pandemic Influenza Testing WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On September, 26, 2007, Peter Shult, Ph.D., director of the WSLH Communicable Disease Division and Emergency Laboratory Response, testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, and Science and Technology -- a subcommittee of the House Committee on Homeland Security. The hearing focused on “Beyond the Checklist: Addressing Shortfalls in National Pandemic Influenza Preparedness.” Dr. Shult represented the Association of Public Health Laboratories and its national membership of state and local public health laboratories. His testimony focused on the vital role public health laboratories play in protecting the public during disease outbreaks, especially new and emerging diseases such as pandemic influenza. Dr. Shult is an expert on influenza and laboratory-based influenza surveillance. He consults with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on laboratory and pandemic influenza response issues and recently served as an expert reviewer for the Promising Practices: Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Tools, an on-line database developed by the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota and the Pew Center on the States (PCS), a division of The Pew Charitable Trusts.
