SUMMARY:WCLN Webinar - Weirdobacterium confusii: Identification and Reporting of Uncommonly Encountered Microbes
DESCRIPTION:Weirdobacterium confusii: Identification and Reporting of Uncommonly Encountered Microbes\n  \nPresenter: \n\nRachael Liesman\, PhD\, D(ABMM)\, is an Associate Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Director of the Clinical Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at Wisconsin Diagnostics Laboratories/Froedtert Health.\n\nDescription of Session: \n“Weirdobacterium confusii? What the heck do I do with that??” While most identification in the microbiology is routine\, organism identification can still be confusing. What’s that bug called? Is it a pathogen or a colonizer? What should we report it? What if it has a new name? \nIn today’s presentation\, we will discuss rarely encountered microorganisms\, using a case-based approach. Through these cases\, we will discuss challenges associated with understanding the pathogenic potential and disease state associated with uncommonly encountered organisms and review best practices for reporting organisms with new names. If you haven’t seen these organisms before\, you just might in the near future! \n  \nA certificate of participation will be granted to each participant based on 1.0 contact hours of instruction toward credit. \nThis program is sponsored by the WSLH\, which is an approved provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. program. \nAs part of the new P.A.C.E. continuing education process\, please go to the ASCLS CE Organizer web site to print your P.A.C.E. certificates. You will search for the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene programs under the “Other P.A.C.E. Programs” tab on the ASCLS CE Organizer web site. You will be asked for a code number to print the certificate. We will provide you this number during the webinar. \nPlease note that the deadline for receiving P.A.C.E. education credit for this webinar is December 11th\, 2025.\n \nMaterials:\n\n Weirdobacterium confusii: Identification and Reporting of Uncommonly Encountered Microbes – Presentation\nWCLN Webinar – Weirdobacterium confusii: Identification and Reporting of Uncommonly Encountered Microbes

SUMMARY:WCLN Webinar - Yes\, I’m Sure That Is What I Saw on the Gram Stain!
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, I’m Sure That Is What I Saw on the Gram Stain!\n  \nPresenters: \n\nSean McGee Hicks\, BS\, MLS(ASCP)\, is a Technical Specialist at ACL Laboratories at Aurora – West Allis Medical Center\nErik Munson\, PhD\, D(ABMM)\, is an Assistant Professor at Marquette University in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science and a member of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene Laboratory Technical Advisory Group\n\nDescription of Session: \nReading a Gram stain correctly\, assessing the quality of the Gram stain\, and accurately reporting what is present on the Gram stain in a manner that helps the clinician provide appropriate care for their patient\, is a skill that laboratory professionals must acquire. This can be challenging for generalists who only prepare and read Gram stains infrequently. Please join us for this interactive session as our speakers share their view through the lens of a microscope as they read Gram stains in this live Zoom event.  You will be able to ask questions as you view the Gram stain slides with them and improve your technical skills in providing quality Grams stain reports. \n  \nA certificate of participation will be granted to each participant based on 0.5 contact hours of instruction toward credit.
