WCLN: A Review of Creutzfeldt-Jakob with an Emphasis on Clinical Laboratory Issues

Description:

This session will provide laboratory professionals with knowledge of current guidelines and recommended practices regarding processing clinical specimens from patients suspected of having human prion disease – Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).  The incidence, surveillance, transmission, and epidemiology of human prion diseases will be discussed.  The session will also cover specimen handling, laboratory safety and specimen transport, types of tests performed, relative risk of various clinical specimens / tissues, disinfection / infection control issues and waste disposal.
