Upcoming Webinars
June 23, 2026 – WCLN Webinar on Tuberculosis (TB)
Nathan Simon, Ph.D. (WSLH) will give a presentation on TB.
This webinar will focus on diagnostic testing for mycobacteria as seen through an historical lens and then transitioning to a “modern mycobacteriology” testing algorithm currently used at the WSLH. Particular attention will be placed on molecular testing methods used to rapidly identify organism or drug resistance, including advances in targeted next-generation or whole-genome sequencing.

Title: Recommendations for Lyme disease testing and diagnosis in Wisconsin
Mode: On Demand Access Recording from May 27, 2026 11:00 AM (recording is currently being process and should be posted by late June)
Speaker: Rebecca Osborn, MPH, Vectorborne Disease Epidemiologist at DHS
Description: Diagnostic testing for Lyme disease relies upon serologic testing algorithms which involve multiple tests with result interpretations that change depending on the timing of testing and the clinical presentation in the patient. This can lead to misinterpretation among health care providers and patients. We will review recommendations for appropriate use, interpretation, and reporting of Lyme disease diagnostic tests in Wisconsin.
Level of Instruction: Intermediate
Objectives:
1. Describe the various FDA-approved Lyme disease serologic assays and algorithms.
2. Appropriately interpret results of serologic testing algorithms.
3. Understand laboratory reporting requirements and LOINC coding recommendations.

Description: In 2026, the WSLH is dedicating the WCLN Technical Conference to one of the most urgent challenges in clinical microbiology: sepsis. This one-day workshop will bring Wisconsin laboratorians together to explore the complexities of detection, diagnosis, and rapid response in sepsis care.
We will begin with Sepsis Stories—real world case perspectives that set the stage for understanding the impact of timely laboratory action. From there, we’ll move into discussions on emerging biomarkers and new technologies, followed by a panel diving into the practical realities of blood culture collection, diversion devices, contamination rates, and bottle volumes.
The afternoon will include foundational training with Blood Workup 101, as well as applied sessions on implementing rapid AST workflows in both small and large laboratory settings. As always, we’ll wrap up the day with a Kahoot challenge and a final session tying together the themes, tools, and practices highlighted throughout the workshop.
Join us for a day of learning, collaboration, and practical skill building as we work together to strengthen Wisconsin’s response to sepsis.
Level of Instruction: Intermediate
Objectives:
1. Describe the clinical impact of timely laboratory action in sepsis care
2. Evaluate emerging technologies and biomarkers for sepsis detection
3. Best practices for upstream specimen collection
4. Demonstrate foundational competencies in blood culture workup
5. Assess how laboratory workflows contribute to hospital and public health sepsis response systems

Mode: On Demand Access Recording from Apr 22, 2026
Speaker: Erik Munson Ph.D. D(ABMM) LabTAG At Large Member
Description: The Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) updates the “Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing” annually. It is essential for laboratories to keep up with these annual changes. Dr. Munson will discuss the major changes made to the 2026 M100 36th edition document.
Level of Instruction: Intermediate
Objectives:
-
- Describe significant changes relevant to pre-existing antimicrobial susceptibility breakpoints, as outlined in the CLSI M100-ed36 document.
- Describe significant changes relevant to antimicrobial susceptibility testing methodology, as outlined in the CLSI M100-ed36 document.
- Identify (new) organism/antimicrobial combinations for which susceptibility breakpoints now exist, as outlined in the CLSI M100-ed36 document.
